WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The family of a man found frostbitten and unable to speak coherently in the southern Polish mountains has identified him as a veteran of the Iraq war.

The man's picture featured in Polish media after he was found last week in subfreezing temperatures in an unheated shed in the Tatra Mountains.

The Defense Ministry said Friday it is taking responsibility for his treatment since he is a former soldier. The man was to be brought for treatment in a military hospital.

He did not respond to questions about who he was, and was identified only after his family saw his image in the media.

Defense Ministry spokesman Jacek Sonta said the lost man is 36-year-old Wlodzimierz N., a veteran from Lebanon and the Iraq war who was discharged from the military in 2006 for health reasons.
