BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi officials say eight people have been killed by an explosion in a crowd of police recruits in Baghdad.

Police said the recruits were leaving the national Police Academy near the Ministry of Interior in eastern Baghdad around midday.

Twenty-one people were wounded in the blast. A hospital official confirmed the casualties.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Insurgents often target Iraqi security officials to underscore how vulnerable to violence the country remains.
