HONG KONG (AP) — A Hong Kong court has begun hearing arguments in the government's appeal of a landmark ruling that could open the way for foreign maids to gain permanent residency in the city.
Government lawyer David Pannick argued Tuesday that September's court ruling was wrong because it places limits on the authorities' ability to decide who is eligible to permanently settle in Hong Kong.
In the ruling, a lower court judge found that an immigration provision excluding foreign maids from permanent residency was unconstitutional.
The case has divided Hong Kong. Some groups fear the case will result in a massive influx of family members arriving in Hong Kong, but supporters of the maids say those worries are unfounded.
The three-day hearing is scheduled to end Thursday.
