DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The retired president of Nigeria is spending his second day in Senegal meeting with more opposition leaders, including pop star Youssou Ndour.

Olusegun Obasanjo, who is in Senegal as the head of an African observation mission, will also meet Thursday with government officials in charge of this weekend’s presidential election. The former Nigerian leader says he will not hesitate to try to “prevent the preventable” by helping mediate the country’s political standoff.

Protesters have taken to the streets every day for the past week to demand the departure of 85-year-old President Abdoulaye Wade who is running for a third term, even though the constitution has a two-term maximum.

Obasanjo started meeting with opposition candidates on Wednesday.
