DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The candidates running against Senegal’s elderly leader prepare for a final day of campaigning ahead of Sunday’s tense election.

Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former president, has been shuttling between the presidential palace and the leaders of Senegal’s opposition in an effort to mediate a solution to the growing political divide.

Several opposition leaders have called for the vote to be delayed, while others say they will not recognize the results if 85-year-old President Abdoulaye Wade is a candidate in the race. Wade is running for a third term, even though the constitution was revised to limit the number of terms to two.

As final rallies were being planned, protesters vowed once more to take to the streets on Friday afternoon to demand Wade’s departure.
