BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts district attorney says a police officer has been shot and wounded by an off-duty police sergeant, who later killed himself.

Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett says Beverly police Officer Jason Lantych was found shot multiple times in front of a Starbucks in Beverly on Friday night. Blodgett says Lantych is in serious condition and undergoing surgery.

Authorities were searching for off-duty Hamilton police Sgt. Ken Nagy, who they believe shot Lantych.

The district attorney’s office says the 43-year-old Nagy returned to the scene later Friday night and shot himself in his car as officers approached him. He has been pronounced dead.
