JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has spent the night in a hospital following tests for an undisclosed stomach complaint, and the government says the 93-year-old is doing well.

Mac Maharaj, spokesman for President Jacob Zuma, said Sunday that doctors have found “his health is satisfactory, given his age.”

Zuma issued a statement late Saturday, the day Mandela was admitted, saying his predecessor is expected to go home Sunday or Monday. Maharaj had no update on that Sunday morning.

Mandela, a Nobel peace laureate who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, has officially retired and last appeared in public in July 2010. He became South Africa’s first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term.
