CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — Central Falls may be best known for being Rhode Island’s only municipality to file for bankruptcy. But a new project is highlighting a very different story: its history as a chocolate manufacturer during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Mike Ritz heads the organization Leadership Rhode Island. He came up with the idea for a “Save Chocolateville” chocolate bar, and it went on sale this month.

The city was once called Chocolateville because of its chocolate mill. It’s pictured on the bar’s label.

The 3.5-ounce bar is made in Central Falls, and proceeds will go to help children in the city. Ritz says the project celebrates Central Falls’ success in the early industrial era and the spirit of entrepreneurship.
