MIAMI (AP) — A Nicaraguan national has been extradited to the U.S. to face charges of drug trafficking and attempting to provide support to a Colombian paramilitary group.
Prosecutors in Miami said Monday that 53-year-old William McField-Bent tried to provide what he thought were members of Colombia’s AUC paramilitary group with grenade launchers, grenades, rifles and other weapons. In fact, McField-Bent was dealing with undercover federal agents. The U.S. considers the AUC a terrorist organization.
McField-Bent faces four drug trafficking charges and four terrorism material support charges. If convicted McField-Bent could get life in prison. Court records did not list an attorney for him.
McField-Bent was initially arrested in Colombia in October 2010. He was brought to the U.S. last week and an initial court appearance is set for Wednesday.
