NEW DELHI (AP) — A news report says Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi has left India temporarily to undergo medical tests.

She had surgery in August for an ailment that was never disclosed.

Press Trust of India quoted party spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi on Tuesday as saying the tests were routine and Gandhi would return in five or six days. Dwivedi gave no other details.

Gandhi left her son, federal lawmaker Rahul Gandhi, and three other party officials in charge of party affairs during her absence last year.

The Gandhi family, no relation to independence leader Mohandas Gandhi, has been India’s main political dynasty since independence.

Rahul Gandhi is widely seen as a future prime minister.
