PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A woman is facing child endangerment and other charges after police said she left her 1- and 3-year-old children alone in their unlocked and rat-infested Philadelphia apartment.

Thirty-one-year-old Dawn Canterbury is also charged with reckless endangerment and drug violations.

Police said Canterbury was the passenger in a car police stopped more than 10 blocks away from her rented apartment. The officers determined she was wanted on fraud charges in suburban Lansdale and they said she was also carrying narcotics.

Officers went to her apartment when she informed police her kids were home alone. They said the apartment was in "deplorable" condition and was infested with rats.

Investigators said the 3-year old boy and 1-year old boy were not physically harmed and are in custody of the Department of Human Services.
