OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (AP) — The cousin of the late New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid is challenging editors to do more to protect journalists who report in dangerous situations.
During a memorial service Saturday in Oklahoma City, Ed Shadid said his cousin's death should draw attention to ensuring journalists have proper medical training and the equipment they need to succeed.
Shadid died last month of an apparent asthma attack while reporting in Syria.
New York Times assistant managing editor Susan Chira says everyone at the newspaper thinks about how to help their journalists be safe as they work. She adds there is always more to be done.
A crowd of more than 1,000 people remembered Shadid as modest, humble, funny, brilliant, a perfectionist and a "citizen of the world" who respected many faiths.
