SZCZECHOCINY, Poland (AP) — A U.S. official says an American woman is among the 16 people who died in a train collision in Poland — the country's worst rail disaster in more than 20 years.

A spokesman for the U.S. consulate in Krakow, Benjamin Ousley, said the family of the U.S. citizen has been informed of her death.

Ousley said he could give no more information, and Polish authorities would release further details about those killed in the train collision late Saturday.

Two trains running on the same track collided head-on in southern Poland, an accident that also left 58 people injured.

The powerful collision occurred near the town of Szczekociny, just north of Krakow, after one of the trains ended up on the wrong track. How the mistake occurred is not yet known.
