Amtrak Says Engineer Hurt When Train Hits Trailer

ALPAUGH, Calif. (AP) — Amtrak says an engineer is injured after a train carrying 84 passengers collided with a truck in northern California.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says the northbound train hit the trailer of a semi as it was "obstructing" railroad tracks around 11 a.m. Wednesday in rural Tulare County.

Tulare County Fire Captain Larry Stucker tells Fresno's KMPH-TV that the big rig had stopped at a stop sign, and that it appeared the truck driver thought the trailer was clear of the tracks.

The engineer was taken to a hospital for possible back injuries.

Amtrac says no one else was hurt, but Stucker says two people were treated at the scene for undisclosed injuries.

Magliari says just the train engine and truck were damaged. The passengers were transported by bus to another train.
