LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Marathon Oil Corp. has announced a $1 million donation to the University of Wyoming for energy related academic and research programs.

The state will match the gift with $1 million of its own to bring the total contribution to $2 million.

The money will support research into the extraction of energy resources from unconventional energy reservoirs.

Marathon is based in Houston and has been operating in Wyoming for 100 years.

In a ceremony Tuesday on the UW campus in Laramie, Gov. Matt Mead thanked the company for its investment in the state.

UW President Tom Buchanan says Marathon's gift continues a tradition of collaboration between industry and university research to equip UW students with the state-of-the-art know-how required to solve the energy challenges facing Wyoming and the world.
