SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi's wife says the domestic violence case against her husband was akin to a coup and was intended to bring him down.

Eliana Lopez made the comments in an op-ed that was published in the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/HuDsLf ) on Friday.

The Venezuelan actress says she has never feared for her safety in the presence of Mirkarimi.

Lopez characterizes the dispute between the couple that led to charges being filed against Mirkarimi as a "very emotional misunderstanding" about possible custody issues. The couple has a young son.

She says she loves her husband and is committed to him and their marriage.

Mirkarimi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment in March. He has been suspended from his job as sheriff and is facing misconduct charges.
