Former Sonic Youth musician Thurston Moore and women's Web site Jezebel are officially in a feud after the women's Web site called Moore "a dick."
Here is what happened: Moore was married to Sonic Youth bandmate Kim Gordon for 25 years, and the two were a true union of Rock Gods, it seemed, until 2011, when they divorced. In April, Gordon opened up about their separation in Elle Magazine and said that Moore had been carrying on an affair. "Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul," said Gordon, of a woman who she said was "starstuck" by Moore.
This week, Moore put the rumors of his infidelity to rest when he confirmed to UK magazine The Fly (which has since closed) that he's been in a "really romantic" relationship with another woman for 6 years. The original interview has been taken down, but here's the quote from the cached version:
I'm in a really romantic place with [new girlfriend] Eva [Prinz]; we've kinda been a couple for close to six years. A lot of those years nobody was very aware of it except us. The cat's been out of the bag a while now, that's kinda where I'm at.
As Flavorwire's Tom Hawking points out, this means that Moore was in a relationship with another woman while still married to Gordon. Hawking called Moore "a dick," writing:
One can only imagine how hard it must be to decide that your marriage of 25 years is over, and clearly, only Moore and Gordon really know what went on in their relationship. But still, it’s not because Thurston Moore has turned out to be human that this whole sorry business is disappointing; it’s because it looks suspiciously like he turned out to be a dick. It’s that, by the sounds of it, he was cheating on Gordon for years, and seems to feel the need to tell the world about this. It’s that by his own timeline, he may well have already been getting it on with his new love when he and Gordon appeared in Bust’s annual Love Issue in 2007, talking about how great their marriage was. And so on.
Then Jezebel's Erin Gloria Ryan piled on, making her opinion of Moore's public admission abundantly clear with the headline, "Thurston Moore Confirms He Is a Dick."
"Aging indie rock cool guy Thurston Moore spoke publicly for the first about the end of his marriage to ageless indie rock cool lady Kim Gordon to a UK magazine recently. And, predictably, he sounds like a dickhole," she wrote.
Now, Moore is fighting back by calling the feminist Web site "gender fascism" on his Facebook page:
Jezebel is gender fascism. By not having any real critical facility to understand, in their case, men in relationship to women (presumably them) they opt to promote hate by imperialist blather. By couching it in feminism is a distinct lack of class, but i'm sure they're having a bit of online fun and when they grow up maybe they'll glean the complexities of real life and love.
Rather than legitimate his criticism, Jezebel has responded to Moore's outburst with a thousand virtual eye-rolls, issuing very few words followed by a series of "You Mad?" Oprah eye-roll GIFs. "So the guy who had a midlife crisis and cheated on his wife with a groupie has the nerve to tell someone else to grow up?" wrote post author Tracie Egan Morrissey. "He's not just a dick, he's also got some major balls."
