Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been a forceful voice on the Supreme Court since her appointment in 1993, and at 81, her opinions (or, more characteristically, her dissents) are as vigorous as ever. But as Ginsburg's star continues to rise on the bench, her fame has also exploded on the Internet, where adoring law student Shana Knizhnik has helped turn the justice into a viral meme with her Tumblr, Notorious RBG.
In a video profile for the Jewish Daily Forward, which recently included Ginsburg in the top five of its annual Forward 50, Knizhnik details the legendary jurist's career and her impact on American law. "She was required to explain why she was taking the spot of a man," Knizhnik says of Ginsburg's early law career. "And that's what caused her to start the women's rights project in the first place -- the fact that there were all of these institutionalized discriminatory laws against women, that she was really instrumental in breaking down."
