Colbert: "Ryan had to meet with Trump ... to make it look like the Republican party's not in chaos"

For lack of any other news, "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert last night detailed House Speaker Paul Ryan's "encouraging" meeting with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

"Ryan had to meet with Trump ... to make it look like the Republican party's not in chaos," Colbert explained. "But nothing happened ... It was pure theater."

Instead of any substantive developments (i.e. endorsements, fistfights), the two released a joint statement, saying, "We are totally committed to working together."

"When Donald Trump commits to something, he totally means it," Colbert said. "Ask any of his ex-wives."
