During NBC's coverage of the Olympics Monday evening, a camera caught Michael Phelps putting his game face on -- and it was a sight to behold. The reason behind the glowering was fairly obvious:

As unsettling as his stare was, it certainly sent a message:


A message with larger implications, if you wanted them there:

Some merely went with the obvious visual cue:

And others ran with it:

Maybe there's a simpler explanation?
