The emails were first reported by Buzzfeed News.
Powell is a respected retired general who served under Republican presidential administrations. He tells BuzzFeed that he doesn't deny the emails' authenticity.
And in a later statement to NBC News, Powell says "the hackers have a lot more" of his emails.
