Former Republican lawmaker Charlie Dent, who officially resigned from Congress last month, told CNN on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s family separation policy is a catastrophe — both from a humanitarian perspective and from a political perspective for the GOP.

While discussing Trump’s decision to double down on separating immigrant families, Dent said that there was absolutely no way that the president and his party would benefit from cruelty to children.

“This is a disaster as a policy,” he said. “And the politics of this is, I think, just terrible.”

Dent then went on to trash the Trump administration for insisting that it has no choice but to separate children from their parents because of current laws. In fact, Dent noted, this was a deliberate policy choice that neither the George W. Bush or Obama administrations ever made.

“That’s just a bunch of bull, let’s face it,” he said. “We know that separating the children from the parents is not something Congress has ordered. This is what the administration has ordered.”

Analyst David Gregory similarly shredded the Trump White House for using immigrant children as hostages in exchange for border wall funding — and he said that he hoped we have finally reached a point where GOP congressional leaders will put their feet down.

“It’s just so cynical on top of being immoral,” he said. “I hope there is a line that you cannot cross politically and survive.”
