John Oliver pulled a switcheroo on Sunday evening’s “Last Week Tonight,” pretending that there was a loophole Democrats could use to save the country from another right-wing justice that will kill Roe v. Wade, same-sex marriage and a slew of other progressive policies. He then quickly revealed he was only giving viewers a brief moment of hope, only for it to be crushed shortly thereafter.

Calling the consequences “extremely grim,” Oliver explained that the only thing Americans can do to save such policies is to vote. He noted that the two key elections that Americans must vote in to save the Supreme Court from slipping into right-wing idolatry are 2014 and 2016.

“Because that is what got us into this mess,” he said.

The host urged his viewers to take out a medium-sized cardboard box and write the words “Time Machine” on it. Don’t expect anything to actually happen since it’s nothing more than a cardboard box. However, the one thing Americans can do is unload every amount of frustration, angry and fear into the box in one, long, hardy scream. Oliver then instructed them to tape the box shut and carry it around with them while knocking on doors, registering voters and voting in November.

“And if you ever come across someone who’s thinking of sitting out an election because neither of the candidates quite do it for them, and there’s not much difference between them anyway, open that box into their f*cking face!” Oliver shouted.
