The office of the late Sen. John McCain on Monday issued the Arizona senator’s farewell statement to both the United States and the rest of the world — and he took one last shot at President Donald Trump’s border wall with Mexico.

In one particularly striking passage, McCain took aim at the tribal brand of politics that Trump unleashed throughout the 2016 presidential campaign.

“We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all corners of the globe,” McCain said. “We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they always have been.”

In another striking passage, McCain said that it was a “privilege” for him to concede defeat in the 2008 election of former President Barack Obama, who become America’s first black president.

“Do not despair of our current difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America,” he wrote.
