The TikTok app creates online waves with short videos that feed viral frenzies

One of the most popular apps in the world has taken Gen Z by storm — but it’s got plenty of room for Millenials, Gen Xers and Boomers. If you haven’t heard of TikTok yet, you will: it’s surpassed the 1 billion download mark, and it’s responsible for a number of viral video trends from the past six months. 

On TikTok, videos featuring comedy, DIY, sports, pet videos and even short talk shows have made their way onto TikTok’s ecosystem. If it exists, you can probably find some videos about it on the app. 

Just like most social media platforms, if you spend time on TikTok, you’ll start noticing some trends. Many of these trends have gotten so popular that they’ve emerged from beneath TikTok’s umbrella to make an impact on sites like YouTube and Instagram. 

In fact, a number of goofy viral sensations you may recognize were actually born on TikTok. The Here's the Tea trend capitalizes on “spilling the tea,” a slang term that means you’re ready to share some hot gossip:

The Microwave Challenge is a gravity-defying visual trick that makes it look like you’re rotating inside of a microwave:

The Steppin’ (I Don’t Know) trend takes rapper Supa Dupa Humble’s popular track and applies it to everyday scenarios, like asking your girlfriend what kind of food she wants:

Or finally finding your long-lost father: 

TikTok isn’t just for “the teens,” and some popular YouTubers have started campaigns to teach their parents to use the app, recreating trends and exploring new ways to have TikTok fun across generations:
