Donald Trump was clearly frazzled by the press digging into his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
The president uncharacteristically dug in his heels on a topic that managed to stick around. Trump was forced to address the story over and over again, as he tried to make new headlines, because his base refused to move on. This week, Trump called for the release of grand jury transcripts from Epstein’s case and threatened to sue conservative media kingpin Rupert Murdoch over a Wall Street Journal report that revealed a birthday note sent to the late sex trafficker by the president.
A new post on Truth Social is a return-to-form for Trump, who appears ready to move past the Epstein “hoax” by making up stories about how much everyone likes him.
Trump said on Sunday that his poll numbers have skyrocketed since the Department of Justice faceplanted with a memo about Epstein’s case files.
“My Poll Numbers within the Republican Party, and MAGA, have gone up, significantly, since the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax was exposed by the Radical Left Democrats and, just plain ‘troublemakers.’ They have hit 90%, 92%, 93%, and 95%, in various polls, and are all Republican Party records,” he wrote. “The General Election numbers are my highest, EVER! People like Strong Borders, and all of the many other things I have done. GOD BLESS AMERICA. MAGA!”
Recent polls that included Democrats and Republicans have found that Trump’s approval rating is abysmal. A majority of Americans feel that the United States is not better off than it was at the start of Trump’s term six months ago. And Trump’s MAGA base must be less enthusiastic than it was before the Epstein story sent his followers (and Trump, briefly) into a spiral.
