On Friday, President Donald Trump has publicly demanded on social media that Microsoft dismiss Lisa Monaco, the company’s President of Global Affairs, citing her prior involvement in federal investigations related to Trump’s handling of classified documents and alleged 2020 election interference. Trump argued that her role at Microsoft, which includes oversight of sensitive government contracts, posed a national security risk.

Monaco previously served as Deputy Attorney General under President Biden, where she oversaw probes into Trump and his associates. Critics say Trump’s demand is part of a broader pattern: over the past year, he has repeatedly sought to retaliate against former officials, investigators, and corporate executives he perceives as hostile. These actions include revoking security clearances, publicly calling for firings, and praising legal actions against former political adversaries, such as the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.

Legal and corporate governance experts warn that Trump’s call could pressure companies to make personnel decisions based on political considerations rather than professional qualifications, raising concerns about corporate independence and the influence of former presidents on private-sector operations.

Microsoft has not responded publicly to Trump’s demand. The episode underscores ongoing tensions between Trump and individuals involved in legal actions he contests, reflecting a strategy that blends social media, public statements, and high-profile pressure campaigns to target critics. Analysts note that this latest demand adds to a growing list of corporate and government figures caught in the crosshairs of Trump’s efforts to punish perceived adversaries.
