Jon Stewart has figured out a dead giveaway for when President Donald Trump is about to do something illegal.
The “Daily Show” host said on Monday that Trump has an obvious “tell” for when “he is definitely going to do” something of “dubious legality”: he says he hasn’t thought about it.
While aboard Air Force One earlier this week, Trump was asked about potential plans for an unconstitutional run for a third term. Trump waved away the question, saying he hadn’t given it much time to rattle around his brain. Behind the desk, Stewart’s ears perked up.
“That’s the tell for whenever he’s asked about something that he is definitely going to do that is dubious legally, ethically or morally,” Stewart said, before pointing out the Trump 2028 hats that Trump sells to his fans. “We know he’s thought about it because he already has the merch.”
The president contradicted himself immediately when a reporter asked a follow-up question about whether he’d consider a vice presidential run.
“I think the people wouldn’t like that,” Trump said of the constitutional end-around, “It’s too cute.”
“Too cute? No, that’s why you don’t go to Build-a-Bear as an adult,” Stewart said. “He’s the kinda guy who’s like ‘I respect Americans too much to play games. If I’m going to run again, I’m going to rip off the Constitution’s head and s**t down its neck.’”
Stewart closed the monologue by pointing to one massive indicator that Trump plans to run in 2028, the White House outbuilding he’s constructing that’s larger than the White House itself.
“You don’t move into a house, knock down a wing and build a 90,000-sq-ft ballroom for the next guy,” Stewart said. “Trump’s not a house-flipper…He’s in it for the long haul.”
