A 12-year-old is facing criminal charges for using these three emojis

And cases like this are becoming more common

A 12-year-old from Fairfax, Va., was charged with threatening her school after she posted a gun, bomb and knife emoji on Instagram, police said.

And a New York City grand jury recently had to decide whether 👮 🔫 was a true threat to police officers.

Emoji is the fastest growing language and the more common it becomes, the more challenging it becomes for the criminal justice system to decipher that true meaning behind the symbols.
