Julianne Hough, who is famous for reasons that are not entirely clear to me, wore blackface to a Halloween party this weekend.
Because they are adults in the world, Hough and her handlers presumably already knew about the cultural history and racist legacy of blackface in America, and that wearing it -- even "in tribute" -- is pretty ignorant. But she did it anyway, and the public wasted no time in telling Hough that her costume was terrible.
Hough's apology makes no mention of why her decision to wear blackface was problematic; instead, she opts for the classic, "I am sorry that you were offended" variety of celebrity apology, tweeting:
I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.
