Why BBQ expert Aaron Franklin uses this vintage grill for steaks

Aaron Franklin knows barbecue. The James Beard Award-winning chef and author of the New York Times bestseller “Franklin Barbeque,” owns the famous restaurant of the same name in Austin. You can even take Franklin’s Masterclass and learn about the intricacies of smoking, grilling, and fire starting.

In his latest book “Franklin Steak,” Franklin covers all things steak, from ordering cuts at the butcher shop to preparing a steak for any occasion. And when it comes to grilling, Franklin shared on “Salon Talks,” that he prefers the vintage PK Grill.

“They're made out of aluminum which, right off the bat, I feel like for years we've been buying grills and then two years later the bottom rusts out because I'm really bad a cleaning grills,” Franklin explained to SalonTV’s Manny Howard.

And the PK Grill has surprising versatility, considering its humble appearance. “I like that you can zone it out 'cause it is square. You can put a little piece of wood in there, put your coals, have a really hot spot, have a cooler spot, you can put a log this way. Always have a safe zone to go,” Franklin said.
