Early Wynn
The Hall of Fame pitcher won 300 games in his career, which included five 20-win seasons.

early wynnApril 6, 1999 | Hall of Fame pitcher Early Wynn, a 300-game winner and one of the fiercest competitors of his time, died in Florida at an assisted living center Sunday night. He was 79.

Mr. Wynn had suffered a heart attack and a stroke in recent years, according to his daughter, Sherry Van Tilburg of Venice, Fla.

During his 24-year pitching career, which spanned from 1939 to 1963, Mr. Wynn won 20 games or more for the Cleveland Indians four times and once for the Chicago White Sox in the 1950s. He was 23-11 in 1954, when the Indians won the American League pennant with 111 wins in a 154-game season. In 1959, he won the Cy Young Award for the pennant-winning White Sox, posting a 22-10 record at age 39.

Mr. Wynn was also that rarity among pitchers: a good hitter, with 17 career home runs and a batting average of .319 one season. Managers would even use him as a pinch hitter. In 1963, he returned to the Indians at the age of 43, needing one more win to reach 300. He was 43. On July 13, 1963, he reached the milestone, pitching the first five innings of a 5-4 Indians victory in Kansas City.

After he retired, Mr. Wynn was a pitching coach for the Indians and the Minnesota Twins. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. Mr. Wynn's wife of 50 years, Lorraine, died in 1994. He is survived by his daughter and son, Joe Early Wynn, also of Venice, a half-sister and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being determined.
