A sentence for Bob Ney

A federal judge sentenced former Ohio Rep. Bob Ney today to 30 months in prison — three months longer than prosecutors had recommended — for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal. Ney sought mercy from the court by submitting letters attesting to his problems with alcohol, but U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle didn’t seem impressed. “As a member of Congress,” she told Ney, “you had the responsibility, above all else really, to set an example and uphold the law.”

As the New York Times reports, Ney told the judge he was sorry for what he’d done and vowed to make amends through “my higher power, the God of my understanding.”
