War Room

Need-to-know basis

As soon as Rudy Giuliani stops citing medical statistics that even the Washington Post calls "spectacularly wrong," maybe he could take a moment to explain the work his company has done for Qatar.

As former Salon Washington correspondent Mary Jacoby reports in today's Wall Street Journal, Giuliani's firm has provided security advice to Qatar, an ally of the United States which nonetheless has been subject to criticism for its conduct involving al-Qaida.

Neither Giuliani's campaign nor his company would answer questions about the work the company did or is doing for Qatar or for anyone else. Giuliani's campaign referred Jacoby to the company, and Giuliani's company said it wouldn't discuss its clients.

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier this week, America's Mayor said you already know everything you need to know about Giuliani Partners, anyway. Asked if he'd release a list of the company's clients, he said: "Everything I did with Giuliani Partners has been totally legal, totally ethical. They are a very ethical and law-abiding business. . . . There's nothing for me to explain about it. We've acted honorably, decently."

  • Will the GOP's negativity produce a backlash?

Democrats like to tell themselves that Americans dislike the character attacks in which the GOP specializes. But that comforting thought is untrue.
