Art Director, San Francisco

Salon.com is hiring a full time Art Director to work in its San Francisco office. This position requires a minimum of 2 years of senior editorial design experience, with great emphasis on the Web medium. Candidates must have excellent typographic and illustration skills, extensive experience with user interface design and the ability to work well within a fast-paced, daily publishing environment. Top managerial and organizational skills are necessary as well.

Software Engineer

Salon is looking for software developers for its home office centrally located in downtown San Francisco. Ideal candidates will have a good sense of humor and solid experience with Perl, Apache, Oracle and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris).

This position requires strong relational database skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines.

In addition to the above, candidates should have experience with some or all of the following technologies:

  • Perl: modular and OOP, mod_perl, HTML::Mason

  • Java: servlets, JSP, applets, beans
  • Database: DBI, JDBC using Oracle, MySQL
  • Servers: HTTP protocol, Apache configuration, API

    Business Development Internship

    Salon.com is looking for an intern to work with its business and strategic development team.

    This is a part-time, paid internship. Activities will include performing outreach for strategic linking relationships, analyzing traffic statistics and other Internet research. You will also assist in syndicating Salon content, developing new business strategies and other administrative duties. You will be responsible for updating the intranet communication site and helping with the general flow of communication overall.

    We're looking for a fun, upbeat person with strong drive and creative ideas. You must be confident on the phone. Knowledge of HTML and excellent Internet navigation skills are needed.

    Table Talk Manager

    The Table Talk manager will oversee the efforts of the hosts and database manager at Salon's acclaimed forum community. We are looking for an accomplished candidate who will thrive on duties such as these:

    • Implement policies, analyze traffic and trends and manage the continued growth of the forums.

    • Coordinate project teams encompassing marketing, technology, advertising and customer-support initiatives involved with the Table Talk community.
    • Directly supervise the Table Talk hosts and database manager.
    • Respond to public questions and complaints of any kind.
    • Attend editorial meetings and provide links from Salon content to related new or ongoing Table Talk discussions.
    • Keep abreast of content of Table Talk as it is created, and note anything that is likely to have a corresponding editorial component on Salon.
    • Promote Table Talk within the rest of the Salon.com sites.

    Qualifications: Online community experience. Proven management and team-building skills. Strong ability to learn applicable technologies. HTML literacy and design experience a plus. Ability to prioritize and multitask. Editorial experience a plus. Strategic thinking ability and strong written, editorial and oral communication skills. Careful attention to detail and ability to juggle ever-changing priorities under tight deadlines.

    Help-desk representative for the WELL (full-time, temporary)

    Salon.com seeks a customer-support help desk representative for its legendary online community service, the WELL.

    This is a fast-paced position in Salon.com's San Francisco office that will require the help-desk representative to manage several projects simultaneously while accepting interruptions from customers who seek phone assistance with e-mail, passwords and other online tools.

    The position is temporary as we reconfigure our help-desk operations. It is ideal for candidates who plan to move or travel later this summer, or who seek their initial professional experience in an online community.

    The successful candidate will have:

  • An appreciation of people, and pride in offering good service.
  • Facility with online communications tools, e.g. e-mail and discussion forums.
  • Basic understanding of the use of Internet technology including FTP, UNIX and Telnet.
  • Comfort in both Mac and Windows environments.
  • Excellent written and telephone communications skills.
  • Ability to work with high degree of accuracy in the face of deadlines, customer confidentiality requirements and rapidly changing project priorities.
  • Knowledge of the WELL is a major plus.
  • Knowledge of HTML and graphics/production tools are desirable.
