San Francisco writer Anne N. Marino makes her debut with "The Collapsible World." Born and raised in New York, Marino received an MFA from Vermont College. She was a finalist for the 1999 Heekin Group Foundation fellowship.

Set in San Francisco, "The Collapsible World" follows Lillie, a young mapmaker trying to find her way after her mother leaves her father, a drug-addicted anesthesiologist. Like her brilliant sister, Nina, who now strips in North Beach nightclubs, her father seems beyond salvation. Lillie seeks solace in an underworld of sex and drugs, but instead finds comfort in the map store where she works.

In this recording, Lillie realizes that her mother may never come back.
