The personal is political

After more than a week of White House push-back against Richard Clarke, we've heard all manner of attacks against his record, character and career achievements. But there's been something even more sinister floating around the last day or two although who knows if there's anything to it. Wonkette says the White House is "considering" floating rumors that Clarke is gay.

Today, Paul Krugman printed a quote from Wolf Blitzer on CNN last week, who said in a two-way with White House reporter John King that unnamed White House officials said Clarke: "wants to make a few bucks, and that [in] his own personal life, they're also suggesting that there are some weird aspects in his life as well." On this last point, though, as Atrios pointed out, the rest of the CNN transcript reveals that John King replied to Blitzer: "None of the senior officials I have spoken to here talked about Mr. Clarke's personal life in any way. "

So it's unclear where Wolf got his information, and for that matter, what kind of sources Wonkette and "Wonketteers" have. But there it is, the rumor mill.
