Enough with the pass

French-bashing should be getting really passé now even for those U.S. hawks annoyed by France's wise refusal to participate in Bush's war in Iraq -- that includes you, Republican National Committee and friends, with your unfunny John Kerry-is-French jokes. But Colorado Gov. Bill Owens apparently has not received the memo that we are no longer bashing the French now that we are begging them and the rest of the international community for help with the Iraq mess.

Here's Owens giving the keynote address at the Michigan Republican Party convention: "You know why they planted those big trees along the boulevard in Paris? So the invading armies could march in the shade." Gov. Owens: French jokes are so over.
