Exclusive Song of the Day: "On the Rise," the Meat Puppets

New music from the indie-rock legends.

Brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood formed the Meat Puppets with drummer Derrick Bostrom back in 1980, right at the beginning of the American punk rock boom. The Arizona band started out as a thrashy, noisy outfit, but Curt's silvery guitar playing and surreal lyrics quickly set the band down a path that led to a place where country music, punk and '60s psychedelia got high on a mesa and stared at a Magritte. The Meat Puppets have had an on-again, off-again existence since Bostrom quit in the mid-'90s, but they've got a new album, "Rise to Your Knees," due out July 17. Today's song is a little more subdued than classic Puppets material, but the shimmering guitar work and oblique lyrics show the band still working to its strengths.
