The decision is apparently intended to defuse talk of tension between the Clinton and Obama camps.

NBC News' Andrea Mitchell is reporting that the Obama campaign has offered Bill Clinton a speaking role at the Democratic convention, and that Clinton has accepted. The former president will speak the same night that Barack Obama's running mate does, Mitchell says.

Mitchell times the decision to news reports on Thursday that discussed tensions between the Clinton and Obama camps, suggesting that the move may be intended to take the wind out of that narrative.
