Sarah Ferguson alluded to her influence-peddling scandal while appearing at a Manhattan book promotion.

The Duchess of York quipped to an audience of book sellers on Wednesday: "As you all know, I really don't like grown-ups. I prefer children."

A British tabloid had reported Sunday that she had offered access to her former husband, Prince Andrew, for $724,000. She apologized for "a serious lapse in judgment" after the story appeared.

The duchess also joked Wednesday that the media presence made it hard for her to get to her engagement. Ferguson had a signing event at BookExpo America at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

She has written several children's books, including "Tea for Ruby." Her latest series is called "Helping Hand Books."
