Rwandan police say an opposition leader who has been missing for a day has been found dead near the border with Burundi.

Police spokesman Eric Kayiranga says Andre Kagwa Rwisereka's body was found Wednesday on the banks of River Mukula in the Southern Province. Rwisereka's car was recovered in the same area on Tuesday.

Rwisereka's death comes in the wake of increased violence ahead of Rwanda's presidential elections in August. President Paul Kagame has been accused of clamping down on dissent.

Rwisereka was the first vice president of the unregistered Democratic Green Party of Rwanda.

The party's president, Frank Habineza, says Rwisereka's head was almost detached from his body.
