NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of plotting to bomb police and post offices in New York City as well as U.S. troops returning home has been denied bail.

Jose Pimentel of Manhattan was arraigned Sunday after city officials announced his arrest Saturday as police say he was in the act of making a bomb and planning to carry out his scheme.

The 27-year-old Pimentel was described by the mayor at a news conference as an "al-Qaida sympathizer" who resented the presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and believed in jihad.
