PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The helicopter pilot who found three family members lost in the rugged forest of southwestern Oregon is the same one who found a San Francisco family lost in a snowstorm in the same region in 2006.

Curry County Sheriff John Bishop says Jackson County Commissioner John Raschor was flying his own helicopter Saturday with a lieutenant from the sheriff's department when they saw the family.

Bishop says Raschor and his passenger spotted Belinda and Daniel Conne, both 47, and their 25-year-old son, Michael, on the edge of a small clearing in a stand of trees outside Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.

Raschor was flying on his own in December 2006 when he spotted Kati Kim and her two young daughters just 35 miles from where he found the Conne family. James Kim died of hypothermia trying to hike out for help.
