NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York City has the best police department in the world and that it's proved every day, pledging not to "let our guard down."

Asked about the head of the FBI in New Jersey being critical of the NYPD's surveillance of mosques and student organizations in the Northeast, Bloomberg told reporters Thursday at a mayors' conference in Chicago that the department has a "daunting task" and has to be perfect every day to prevent terrorism.

Bloomberg says he's going to keep the lessons of 9/11 fresh in his mind and never forget.

He said the NYPD will "do what they're trained to do. We have the best police department in the world and I think they show that every single day and we have stopped 14 attacks since 9/11 fortunately without anybody dying."
