George H.W. Bush spent part of his weekend serving as an official witness for a same-sex marriage, according to the Washington Post.

With his wife, Barbara, at his side, the former president attended the wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, partners and co-owners of the general store in Kennebunk, Maine. Thorgalsen posted a picture of Bush signing the marriage license to her Facebook, but did not respond to the Post's request for comment.

A Bush aide released a statement confirming that Bush was in attendance, but implied there was no greater political significance to be taken from the event, saying, "They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends."
