"But now I want to be greedy for the United States," he added rather unconvincingly

At his "Special Event for Veterans" in Des Moines, Iowa, GOP front-runner Donald Trump admitted that "my whole life I've been greedy, greedy for money -- but now I want to be greedy for the United States."

"I'm going grab all that money, all that money -- for the United States."

"But I always feel guilty," he added, "because all my life I made money, I'm really creative at it, all my life I did well. My father always said, 'everything my boy touches, turns to gold.'"

He said this by way of explaining why he's self-funding his campaign, and about how doing so makes him beholden to no one except himself -- the very person he just characterized as an inveterate money-grubber.

The audience, of course, met this humble story of his greatness with applause.
