WATCH: Charles Krauthammer unloads on Fox News colleagues for believing NC transgender bathroom law is a real issue

"Do we really have an epidemic of transgenders being evil in bathrooms across the country?" he asked

The majority of commentators on Fox News are outraged at ESPN's firing of former pitcher Curt Schilling for insensitive remarks he made on social media about transgender individuals -- but at least one person employed by the network knows the North Carolina anti-LGBTQ law is a "solution in search of an issue."

That person was not Todd Starnes, who was appearing on Varney & Company complaining that while Schilling's First Amendment rights weren't being violated, "what Schilling wrote isn't controversial, and it does seem to back up this meme that if you oppose letting men go into ladies' rooms, you're some sort of 'transphobic bigot.'"

On Fox & Friends this morning, co-host Brian Kilmeade insisted that Schilling "was one of those people who when you go up to him in the locker room and ask his opinion, he gives you it." ESPN "asked him to do that," Kilmeade said, then fired him for doing so.

But on Special Report with Bret Baier, Charles Krauthammer called the entire issue a "distraction" and a "solution in search of an issue."

"Do we really have an epidemic of transgenders being evil in bathrooms across the country?" he asked. "I haven't heard of a single case."

If it has happened at all, Krauthammer continued, it is still a "very small problem at the edges of other problems having to do with gender identity that's become national precisely because Republicans in North Carolina decided it was a problem."

"It is not a major national problem, and it should have been left that way," he concluded.
