Add Sen. Bernie Sanders to the list of critics who believe President Trump's response to the disaster in Puerto Rico has been dreadful. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Sanders went after Trump and his decision to attack the mayor of San Juan.
"It is unspeakable," Sanders told CNN's Jake Tapper.
The Independent senator also denounced Trump's attempt to portray the recovery process as smooth sailing.
"I don't know what world Trump is living in," Sanders said. "The people of Puerto Rico have suffered one of the worst disasters in the history of that island."
Much of Trump's commentary has taken place at his private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Sanders also expressed displeasure with that.
"Trump is speaking from his fancy golf club, playing golf with his billionaire friends, attacking the mayor of San Juan, who is struggling to bring electricity to the island, food to the island, water to the island, gas to the island."
Tapper asked Sanders if he believed race played a role in Trump's reaction to the devastation in Puerto Rico. Sanders answered in the affirmative.
"Given the president's history on race, I think we have a right to be suspect that he is treating the people of Puerto Rico a different way than has in Texas and Florida," he said.
Sanders' appearance on "State of the Union" followed an interview with White House budget director Mick Mulvaney. Mulvaney unequivocally supported the president while speaking with Tapper.
