During one of CNN’s promo-as-news segments, "United Shades of America" host W. Kamau Bell on Friday told his CNN colleague Kate Bolduan that the new episode of the CNN documentary series will focus in part on megachurches, which he said “pervert” the Gospel to convince congregants to vote for someone Jesus would reject out of hand.

“Megachurches are sort of the face of Christianity right now but specifically a style of mega churches,” Bell said, name-checking Franklin Graham and Joel Osteen as two of the worst examples of the trend.

It’s “personality-driven model of church”, Bell said. “The pastor says it feels more like a rock concert and a motivational speech.”

The message of Jesus gets muddled, and sometimes completely perverted,” Bell continued, “to tell people to do things and vote for people who Jesus would not vote for.”
